Oct. 14th, 2007 02:55 pmI don't think I can even summarize what's been going on in LJ lately, but if you look at
chopchica's journal you should get the general idea.
As a semi-professional Christian, I feel like I need to say something to some of my co-religionists out there. What I need to say is, Eat it, dudes.
We have been in charge of most of the Western world for nearly two thousand years. Our holy books have been used, with our consent and collaboration, to promote genocide. A significant number of churches still teach people that "the Jews" killed Jesus and that this guilt is passed down through every generation. We are the primary source and engine of anti-Semitism in the western world, and this anti-Semitism is still very real and lively, as evidenced on LJ over the last few days.
The fact that it is now (belatedly) regarded as more polite to say "Happy Holidays" than "Merry Christmas" is, you know, a pretty tiny suffering in comparison. Particularly when the whole entire western world is still gearing the calendar around our religious observance, or at least the curious uses to which capitalism has put our religious observance (again, with our consent and collaboration).
Suck it up, people. This is something we have to deal with in good faith, we have to confront it and root it out, and that's going to be a long, hard task. Don't go whining around and dumping on members of minority groups when they say they feel excluded. They feel excluded because they are excluded, and it's our fault, and we really better be doing something about it.
